Morning Message:May 13th Message

Read Aloud: Down By The Cool Of The Pool

Literacy- I can touch
Materials - blue journal, pencil

Look at the picture above. What are the children doing? Where are they headed? What will they find along the way? What are some of the things they would touch along the way. How would you describe those items?

Write in your journal:

I can touch _________. It feels ____________.

Write at least 3 items you would touch from the photo. If you can go outside and explore, tell me about the items you touched. How did they feel? If you can't go outside, here are some examples of items I found on my walk. What are the items and how would they feel.

Check out epic books and type in "The Texture Song" for a review on texture words.  Epic Books

Math

Quick video: Heavy vs. light
Task: Find objects in nature and compare if they are heavy or light.
1. Find at least 5 different objects in nature (ie. rocks, leaves, sticks, feather, twigs, berries, etc.)
2. Hold up each object (you could even close your eyes) so you can determine if it feels "heavy" or "light"
3. Arrange the natural objects in order from lightest to heaviest OR heaviest to lightest.

These objects in the picture above are in order from heaviest to lightest (they are just items found in your house not in nature). As you compare each object, have your child use the vocabulary "This is heavier than _________ but lighter than _________." This will help determine the order that you place the objects in.

Nature Challenge (optional)
Materials: stick, yarn, ribbon, string, pipe cleaners, etc. glue (I used hot glue to make it the fastest - white glue would work too)

Find a stick.  Now it's time to get creative.  Wrap your stick in yarn (or whatever you have).  Make it beautiful.  You now have a magical pointer stick!  Have fun playing with your magic wand!  Can you tell a story with your magic stick?
