Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!  Kindergarten was very fun today.  All of our arrival centers were about Halloween. We printed halloween words, played bingo, roll and count game with rings, crafts etc. We loved seeing everyone dressed up in their costumes!  We drew pictures of ourselves in our Halloween costumes in our journals.  Some of us drew pictures of pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and trick or treating with our families.  We used Smarties to sort by color and graph the number of Smarties in the box.  Ask your child what color they had most in their box.  After students graphed their Smarties, they got to eat them.  This was the highlight of their day! All students had gym today with Mr. Der . What game did your child play today? Ask them to share. Students came home with overflowing colored folders.  Please empty the folders out and return them on Monday.  Every child has more book circles in their folders.  Thank you for continuing to read with your child and send the circles back.  We are

Jacket Racket begins today and will continue to Wednesday, Nov. 6 th .  Please send gently used winter wear including coats, mittens, scarves, hats, boots, etc. to school in a bag marked with the items and sizes inside. We appreciate your support of this much needed program! Today was a busy day at school. We read the story "True Story" by Marty Chan. Marty has 2 naughty cats that live at his house - we had fun learning about the trouble the cats get into. Please ask your child what Marty's cats names are and what each cat is best known for. We were inspired by Marty's cats to do a guided drawing of a cat. We used sharpies and wrote the word "cat" once we completed our picture. We then used black paper to make a cat of our own. We used scissors to cut a head, eyes, ears, mouth, nose and whiskers. The AM Kindergarten classes had gym with Mr. Der, please ask your child what they did in the gym, while the PM Kindergarten classes had a chance to play with t

Today was another chilly day! We read the story, The Snowy Day and talked about our favorite snowy day activities. We drew pictures and wrote in our journals. We are all writers in kindergarten. We learned to play go fish with some of the adult volunteers this morning. Play with your child at home. Both classes got to attend both gym and music today. Ask your child what they did with Mr. Der and Mrs. Coulson. We were able to go outside and get some fresh, cold air before eating lunch in the classroom. We had lots of fun at center time and are looking forward to Halloween. Thank you so much to all our parent volunteers and all the students for coming to school prepared for our field trip. We hope to reschedule our field trip. More details to follow. We are speaking with Fish creek to coordinate to go on a future PM kindergarten Friday date with the possibility of having an extended bell time. Thursday is Halloween! Children are welcome to wear their costumes to school on Thursday as

Today was quite the SNOW day! We read the story, The Snowy Day and talked about our favorite snowy day activities. We drew pictures and wrote in our journals. We learned to play go fish with some of the adult volunteers this morning. Play with your child at home. Both classes got to attend both gym and music today. Ask your child what they did with Mr. Der and Mrs. Coulson. We ate lunch in the classroom and then went to the gym to play with the big blue blocks. The children used their imagination to create various things such as a pirate ship, the Calgary tower, a ball run etc. This afternoon we were fortunate to get the chance to meet author Marty Chan. He is such an engaging storyteller. Ask your child about the trouble his cats get into. Thank you so much to all our parent volunteers and all the students for coming to school prepared for our field trip. Sorry for the late decision to cancel. We were hoping to go and just shorten the day  because of the cold but once we wer

We started our day with arrival centers. Many of our learners love to play cooperative games during this time. We have many boardgames set out such as snakes and ladders, candy land, trouble, jenga, tick tac toe,  memory and cards. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn to share, take turns and win or lose gracefully. Do you have any games you can play with your child this weekend? We finished up our work on learning about apples. We sketched an apple and labelled all the parts of an apple. Ask your child to share what they learned. We attended a peace assembly put on by the Grade 3/4 Kindness Pod. Great work to all of those students. Ask your child about the assembly. Reminder about the field trip on Monday and Tuesday. Please dress for the weather as we will be outside all day and remember to be at school for 8:15am. AM kindergarten Monday October 28 (NO PM classes) PM kindergarten Tuesday October 29 (NO AM classes) Thank you to all the parents who have volunt

Today was a super day in Kindergarten.  We were surprised to see a pumpkin sitting on the table.  We had a great discussion about what we know about pumpkins!  Our Kindergarten friends are very knowledgeable about pumpkins.  Please ask your child what they know about pumpkins.  We read the story "Sixteen Runaway Pumpkins."  Ask your child what the farmer turned the pumpkins into at the end of the story. We were inspired to draw our own pumpkins.  We used oil pastels to draw a pumpkin. They turned out beautiful! All classes went to gym with Mr. Der Tomorrow is AM Kindergarten. Monday October 28  is our Fish Creek Field trip for AM kindergarten (NO school for PM kindergarten) Tuesday October 29 is our Fish Creek Field trip for PM kindergarten (NO school for AM Kindergarten) WE NEED 2 MORE VOLUNTEERS FOR BOTH AM/PM KINDERGARTEN FIELD TRIPS. Today is Take Me Outside Day.  The AM learners went outside and played with various outdoor equipment such as skipping ropes and balls. They also had some time at the playground. Our PM learners went to the hub and played an outdoor game. It is a circle game (with a song). Ask your child how to play. Please always ensure your child is always dressed for the weather as today was extremely windy and  cool. We made an apple book, we used our fingers to tear paper into apple trees, apples, apple cores and seeds.  Tearing paper is good practice to strengthen our fingers as we continue to further develop our fine motor skills. We are sending the books home with your child. Practice reading the book. Have your child use their finger and point to the words as you read through it. Kindergarten Reading Challenge!   Today your child brought home a sheet in their colored folder with 6 circles on it.  Each time you and your child read a book together please fill out the circle and send it bac

Today was a great day at school!  The AM children worked hard in their journals to draw pictures of their adventures at Glenbow Ranch.  The PM children completed personal journals. We copied and printed the sight word "my" and drew pictures to demonstrate. For example, my cat, my dog, my family, etc. Practice using my at home when reading and drawing. Can your child find the word "my" in a book, on posters, on newspaper, in magazines etc. We went to music and gym. Please ask your child what they learned in music and gym today. We played the math game Power of Ten. Ask your child to play the game with you. You can always use a deck of cards to play.  Once your child is familiar with the game and wants to be challenged you can flip 2 cards over at once and add them together. Friday, Oct. 25 is AM Kindergarten. There is no school for PM Kindergarten. If you have not returned your Fish Creek field trip forms, please return them ASAP. Important Dates: Monday,

Thanks to all of our volunteers who made it out to Glenbow Ranch with us yesterday. We had a very windy day but the kids were troopers. Today we drew our favourite part of Glenbow Ranch in our journals today - ask me what I saw, or did, or enjoyed the most. We also made Number City in our visual journals and made corresponding towers of snap cubes to match the correct numeral. Ask me which one was the highest? the shortest? The tower in the middle... We also had a practice fire drill with the fire department this morning. The fire department was very proud of how quickly and quietly we got out of the building. Ask me what the 3S's stand for. We had lots of time at centers - ask me where I enjoyed playing with my friends. Thank you to our yellow group for sharing their Happiness Museum items with us this week! Enjoy your weekend. IMPORTANT DATES: Monday, Oct.21 AM Kindergarten field trip to Glenbow Ranch (all day 8:20am-3:05pm) / NO school for PM kindergarten Friday

Today we read "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" by Laura Numeroff.  Many interesting things happen to the mouse if you give him a cookie.  As we begin to explore the elements of story, students were challenged to draw pictures that correspond to the what happened first in the story, what happened in the middle of the story and what happened last.  Please ask your child to share their first, then, last story about the mouse's adventures with you. In math, we have begun to explore the concept of a set of numbers.  Using manipulatives, students were asked to create sets (groups) of 3, 5, 7.  Please have your child practice making sets of numbers at home. Our first year student teachers were at school with us in the morning.  The student teachers had the opportunity to read a story to the students. Tomorrow is Glenbow Ranch field trip for the PM kindergarten.  There is no AM Kindergarten tomorrow .  Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather as we will be outside

Tuesday October 15

Glenbow Ranch field trip forms went home with AM Kindergarten today. We would appreciate it if both AM and PM please return the completed forms tomorrow. This will help us to be organized for our trip to the Ranch on Thursday (PM) and Monday (AM). Today we met with our grade 3/4 buddies from the Kindness Pod in the morning and then from the Joy Pod in the afternoon. Please ask your child what their buddy's name is. Our Kindies have met some grade 3/4 friends who could possibly be in their group on our Glenbow Ranch field trip. We had fun playing cooperative board/card games or reading with our new friends today. We had a lesson from our occupational therapist on cutting. She showed us how to use scissors correctly, thumbs up, chicken wings tucked in, helper hand moves the paper, paper stays out in front of you and keep your wrist straight (no crooked wrists). Please encourage your child to use correct scissor skills when cutting at home. The blue/yellow groups had gym with Mr

Today we made applesauce! We learnt how to read a recipe and follow directions. A cookbook is a great idea to use at home with your child when making meals or baking and having them help you along. Thank you to our parent volunteers who helped prepare our apples so our mini chefs could cut up all the apples safely (with a plastic knife of course). We also looked closely at the inside of an apple and learnt how to label all the different parts such as: core, seed, stem, leaf, skin and flesh. Ask me to show you all the parts the next time you cut an apple in half. It will be the PM Yellow Group's turn to share their items for the Happiness Museum next week. Notices went home today for the Yellow Group. Some students received fun snack today. In order to order fun snacks, you must register and login on the Healthy Hunger website. From there, click on Eric Harvie - KINDERGARTEN when locating the school. Orders must be placed at least a week in advance. If you are not receiving
