Literacy
In the story Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt, it mentions, "Down in the dirt, water soaks deep. roots drink it in, and a long legged spider stilt-walks over the streams." Can you find the spider in this picture?
Let's learn more about spiders!
Materials: Journal, pencil and pencil crayons
Listen to the following fiction and non fiction stories : The Very Busy Spider and Super Spiders
Following the stories, choose which story you would like to respond to. Draw your favorite part from "The Very Busy Spider," or write out an interesting fact from "Super Spiders".
Click here for a guided drawing of a spider
Remember to write a sentence to explain your drawing. For example, if you are writing about The Very Busy Spider you might write, My favorite part was.... I liked when...
If you are drawing about Super Spiders, you might say, I learned that... Spiders can.. Spider are..
Math
I Spy Card Game
Materials-deck of cards
This card game is for two players. You will need one deck of cards with the picture cards removed.
Below are the instructions. Please watch this video as I started the game with 2 rows of 4 and only using number cards up to 6. If that is too easy then you can work your way up to playing with higher numbers and more rows.
Extension: Playing with more cards and higher numbers
Instructions

Instructions
- The cards are dealt face up in an array, either a 10 x 4 or 8 x 5 array.
- The first player challenges the other one to find two cards next to each other that add to make a particular number. The first player says, “I spy with my little eye two cards that add to make ______.”
- The second player then looks for 2 cards that add to make the number. The two cards to be added need to be next to each other either horizontally or vertically. The player then picks the cards up to add them to their pile. They do this with any other pairs that add to make the number as well.
- If the second player misses any pairs that add to the number, then player one may claim them.
- The players alternate taking turns and continue until all the cards are gone.
- The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game.
- As large gaps appear in the array, move the cards closer together to fill those gaps.
Challenge (optional)
Spider Web Art
Here's what you'll need:
- Paper
- pencils
- Sharpies
- watercolors and paintbrushes or markers
- plastic spider rings (optional)
Begin by drawing a line through the middle of the top and side (you're making a giant plus sign).
Then, draw a line from corner to corner.
Now that the support lines are drawn, it's time to add those swooped lines that will transform the design into a spider web! I model this one section at a time for my students because it is tricky for some of them to make those swooped lines.
Point out that the swooped lines in one section should connect to the swooped lines in the next section over.
Once all the pencil lines are drawn, use a black Sharpie to trace over their original lines. Then, they erase any pencil lines that are peeking through.
Finally, it is time to paint!
