EHS Kindergarten Blog 2019-2020

We read, "Animals In Winter" and talked about what animals do in winter to survive in the winter. The children chose an animal and used construction paper to make an animal we have been learning about.  The children wrote what the animal does in winter and whether it hibernates, migrates or adapts. Ask me what animal I chose today. Our first year Mount Royal student, Kaitlyn Grover, taught a lesson this morning about being unique and she talked about how all of us are different and special in our own way. She read, "No Two Alike".  The children then traced and cut out their hand. They created trees from their handprint and added birds to the trees. In the afternoon, we read a story with Mrs.Kinsman. Ask me what the story was about and who else is named Rocket that is in our school? This Friday, Feb.21 is PM kindergarten. There is no school for AM kindergarten. Today we welcomed Mrs. Nakia Bedry to our class. She is training to be an educational assistant. She will be with us for 10 weeks every Wednesday and Thursday. Our first year Mount Royal student Brittney Pickford taught a lesson this morning about hibernation. She read Baby Bear's NOT Hibernating and then the students had to graph which animals hibernate and which do not hibernate. The children then chose a math center to visit. They could complete a pattern or sort and graph the colored bears. All students went to gym today and practiced their volleyball skills. In groups, we created habitats for the winter animals. The children worked together in groups to use fabric and loose parts to create their environment. The children had to find a place for each animal and explain what that animal does in the winter. We have a new student teacher Miss Gaspar (Miss G) from the University of Calgary who will be joining us until April 24th. She is in her 2nd and final year practicum and we are very lucky to have her with us! We read, Animal Camouflage in the Snow and watched Animals with Winter coats. We talked about how animals adapt to their environment in the winter. Ask your child what adaptation means and which animals adapt to our environment. We created a concept map to organize our thinking about Winter animals. We did a guided drawing of an animal that adapts to winter conditions. The AM drew a rabbit and PM drew a fox. We used art hub for kids to help us draw step by step. Mrs. Conley and Mrs. Watterson's classes had music and Mrs. Mask's classes had gym. This Friday is PM kindergarten. NO school for AM. Today we celebrated Valentine's Day. Many of our friends brought valentine's for our classmates. We started the day by passing out the valentine's and having big centers. We watched a video about Migration. Ask your child what migration means and why do animals migrate? We made a concept map about migration. We drew many animals that migrate in the winter months. Which one did your child draw? We read a story about Butterflies (AM) and Sea Turtles (PM) and then did a guided drawing. The children did a great job with their drawings! They will be showcased at our celebration of learning.  All classes had gym and we played junk in my yard. There is no school Thursday Feb 13, Friday Feb 14 and Monday February 17th, for teacher's convention and the family day long weekend. We went to our last session of "Who Do You Tell ?" We reviewed what we learned about last week and did a few other activities. Ask your child what they learned about.  We read a Valentine's Story and talked about how do you show kindness. We drew in our journals to represent our ideas using our 5 Star Drawing. (Colours make sense, color in the lines, use many colors, take your time and add many details). We decorated our Valentine's Day bags. BLUE and YELLOW group went to music. We will be celebrating Valentine's Day in Kindergarten on Wednesday February 12th.  Feb 12th will be red, pink and white day in Kindergarten, please dress in these colors if you have them! If you are planning to send valentines with your child, please have your child sign their name only on the card.  Please leave the "To" space blank.  This makes it easier for your child to hand out the valentines.  AM kindergarten has 40 friends and PM kindergarten has 37 friends. ...

We had such a busy and  fun filled day with Scientists in School.  We visited 4 different stations. At each stations we learned about something different. We learned about birds and what they do during the winter and created a bird feeder out of a pinecone. We learned about animals that hibernate, migrate and adapt to their surroundings. We used puppets to demonstrate our learning. We learned about snow science and looked at snowflake slides under a microscope then created our own. The last station, we learned about winter weather and did some experiments to learn about water vapor and frost. Ask your child about what they learned today. There were also some handouts that are in the students folders from the program. (AM kindergarten will receive the handouts tomorrow) A HUGE thank you to our volunteers. Today was a fun day at school.  We began the morning by re-reading the story "Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?".  This is such a fun book as it helped us to further investigate how animals stay warm in the winter.  We created flip books where we could ask our own question about how animals stay warm in winter.  Ask your child what their question was and what the answer is to the question.  We learned the words "yes" and "no" and practiced writing these words in our flip books. We also began painting a trifold that we are going to use to make an interactive winter scene for our celebration.  We had fun painting such a big piece of art!
